First time in Italy and you are visiting Central-South Italy

Read here! Central-South Italy is a fascinating region full of beautiful cities, delicious food, and ancient history. Here is a suggested itinerary for a 2-3 week trip during June or July:

Rome

Day 1-3: Rome

  • Arrive in Rome and spend the first few days exploring the city's highlights, such as the Colosseum, Roman Forum, and Vatican City.
  • Visit the Pantheon, Trevi Fountain, and Piazza Navona.
  • Enjoy some delicious Italian cuisine and try some gelato!
Pompeii

Day 4-6: Naples and Pompeii

  • Take a train to Naples and explore the historic city center.
  • Visit Pompeii, an ancient Roman city buried by the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79.
  • Enjoy some of the city's famous pizza and seafood dishes.
Amalfi Coast

Day 7-9: Amalfi Coast

  • Take a scenic bus or boat ride along the stunning Amalfi Coast.
  • Visit the towns of Amalfi and Positano, and enjoy the breathtaking views of the Mediterranean Sea.
  • Relax on one of the region's beautiful beaches.
Puglia

Day 10-12: Puglia

  • Take a train or rent a car to the region of Puglia.
  • Visit the charming town of Alberobello, famous for its unique trulli houses.
  • Explore the historic city of Lecce, known as the "Florence of the South" for its Baroque architecture.
Sicily

Day 13-15: Sicily

  • Take a ferry or flight to the island of Sicily.
  • Visit the historic city of Palermo and its famous markets.
  • Explore the ancient Greek ruins of the Valley of the Temples in Agrigento.
  • Relax on the beautiful beaches of Taormina.

Transportation:

  • Trains are a convenient way to travel between most of the destinations on this itinerary.
  • For Puglia and Sicily, it may be more convenient to rent a car to explore the region.

Special events and activities:

  • Rome hosts the Feast of St. Peter and St. Paul on June 29th, with a papal blessing and a traditional fireworks display.
  • Naples hosts the Pizzafest in June, a celebration of the city's famous pizza.
  • Palermo hosts the famous Festival of Saint Rosalia in July, with a religious procession and fireworks.
